Installing MyBB (with images)

This tutorial will walk you through the process of installing MyBB for your own personal use.

What You Will Need:

1. MyBB Software (download here)
2. FTP Client (ex:Filezilla)
3. knowledge of how to create a database in your hosting panel
4. knowledge of chmodding files
   

Step One:
Once you download the MyBB Software from the link above, extract it on your desktop. You should see two folders inside the package

• Documentation
• Upload
  

Step 2:
Now using your ftp client, you need to upload the entire contents of the "Upload" folder to your hosting account. Don't upload the folder itself...just everything inside it. You can use ctrl+A to select all.

Step 3:
Now we have to do a little prep work to ensure the installation goes as smoothly as possible. Using your ftp client, browse to the following folders and files, and chmod them as instructed below:

CHMOD the following files to 666 (ie, make sure that PHP can write to them).
./inc/settings.php
./inc/config.php (you must rename config.default.php to config.php first)
./inc/languages/*your_language*/*all files* (optional)
./inc/languages/*your_language*/admin/*all files* (optional)

CHMOD the following folders to 777 (ie, make sure that PHP can write to and execute from them).
./cache/
./cache/themes/
./uploads/
./uploads/avatars/
./admin/backups/ (optional)

Step 4:
Now in your cpanel/hosting panel, create a database and a database user (I recommend not to use the root user). Keep this information near by as you will need it later in the installation.

Step 5:
Now that all the prep work is done, it's time to actually begin the installation. The following images will guide you through step by step as to what you should be seeing on your screen. To begin installation navigate to the index of the install directory (ex: http://yourdomain.com/install/index.php)


This is the first screen. Here you can choose whether or not to send anonymous stats back to MyBB.



Click next to accept the license agreement and continue with the installation.



The above screen performs a check to ensure all the necessary requirements are present in order to continue. If something is not as it should be, it will show up read giving you the chance to change it so it can proceed. Iff all requirements are met, click "Next"



Remember the database you created at the beginning of this tut? Now you must fill in all the proper data into the fields.



If you provided all the correct database details, you should be presented with a list of tables that were created by the installation. If you fail to get the above screen, then your database info is incorrect. Go back and re-enter it correctly.



The above two screens just shows that data is being inserted into the tables that were created in the previous step. It will then insert the default MyBB theme. Just click "Next" on these two screens to continue.



Now it's time to configure the basic information of your forum. The Forum URL and COOKIE Domain should be already filled. If not, fill them in as follows:

• Forum Name - What your forum is called
• Forum URL - The direct address of your forum (ex: http://yourdomain.com)
• Website Name - If you have a seperate website to go with your forum, write it here
• Website URL - URL of the website you named above
• Cookie Domain - ex: .yourdomain.com
• Cookie Path - If not installed in a subdirectory, this will be "/"
• Contact Email - The email address you want to use for the "Contact" link on the forum
  

Now you need an administrator account to log into the forum as well as use the admin CP area. Fill in the above data accordingly and please ensure you have a strong password that will be difficult for anyone to "break"



Yay you did it!!! You successfully installed MyBB. Now just click one of the links to login to the frontend or admin CP and check out your new forum!
NOTE: In the above image, please ensure that a lock file has been created in the install directory as mentioned. If not, you can create one yourself, or delete the install folder from your hosting account.
For extra security you can CHMOD config.php back to 644, or even 444, but make sure you leave settings.php writable, as well as all the other files and folders with extra permissions.
